Wastewater Plant Operator 1

The Town of East Greenwich is accepting applications for a Plant Operator 1. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair and inspection of wastewater treatment plant equipment, building, collections system, maintenance of rights of way and pump stations. Work is generally performed under the direct supervision of the Wastewater Superintendent or his designee.

Essential duties for this position include:

  • Operates, repairs and maintains WWTP facility and pumping system equipment as well as the collection system, monitors gauges, meters and control panels;
  • Assists with electrical work, maintains pump stations and other equipment as required;
  • Responsible for preventative and corrective maintenance of all plant equipment and perform custodial duties;
  • Monitors and maintains equipment for abnormalities, collects and records operational data, adjust operation parameters to main the process within state and federal specifications;
  • Load trucks for sludge pick-up;
  • Subject to stand-by, call-backs, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Participates in snow and ice removal for pump station and Treatment facility;
  • Maintains fuel distribution system in accordance with State guidelines;
  • Maintains adequate supply of support materials and equipment as necessary;
  • Participates in the department’s nitrification, de-nitrification and ultra-violet disinfection systems;
  • Maintains rights of way to ensure access to the wastewater collection system;
  • Operates treatment plant and collection system rolling stock equipment, including but not limited to trucks, collection system sewer jet, hoisting and lifting equipment, grounds maintenance equipment, etc.;
  • Conducts field inspections and prepare field cards;
  • Performs related work as required to complete work assignments.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED, Associates Degree preferred
  • 1-3 years’ experience working at a wastewater treatment facility
  • A valid Grade I Rhode Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate or the ability to obtain through examination within one year of appointment.
  • Valid Driver's License, with no restrictions that would limit or adversely affect insurability, CDL with Tanker Endorsement preferred.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Capabilities

  • Basic knowledge of wastewater treatment pumps, plumbing, electrical, controls and instrumentation
  • Knowledge of the standard methods for the examination of wastewater treatment systems, related equipment and laboratory testing practices and related equipment
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and schematics
  • Ability to understand laboratory tests
  • Ability to meet and deal with the public effectively and appropriately
  • Ability to handle problems and emergencies effectively
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a detailed and safe manner including the operation of high-pressure equipment such as a sewer jet to clean sewer lines.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Proficient computer skills
