Job Summary
This is a multi-skilled position, under the supervision of the Superintendent and/or Working Foreman of the Highway Department. Work requires knowledge and operations of heavy equipment and special tools used in the operation of the Highway Department. Work may be heavy and be performed under adverse weather and working conditions.
Distinguishing Characteristics
- Selected by the Highway Superintendent and approved by the Town Administrator.
- Keep updated on new equipment and attend any related training or educational classes.
- Will be required to be on call to respond to Highway/Town Department emergencies. At times must perform duties in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work at times without supervision.
- Heavy lifting will be required at times.
Recommended Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- Class B CDL motor vehicle license (at least General Knowledge and Air Brakes Endorsements).
- Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer’s License with at least 2A. (or ability to obtain license within 90 day probationary period).
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years experience and/or specialized training in vehicle/engine repair and five years of related public works or construction equipment maintenance experience demonstrating ability to maintain, diagnose and perform major and minor repair work on all equipment typical to Highway and Town operations. (Knowledge of small engine repair and computer knowledge a plus).
- Ability to guide and direct others in the Highway/Town Departments, pertaining to preventative maintenance of equipment.
- Ability to perform torch-cutting and welding operations.

Examples of Major Duties (essential job functions)
- Sets up and maintains a maintenance schedule for all Highway and Town Department vehicles and equipment and other departments as requested by the Superintendent.
- Carries out an equipment maintenance program, necessary repairs, and ensures all equipment is in safe working condition at all times. This may require repairs to be performed outside of normal working hours.
- Reviews and addresses all problems or needed repairs that are written or verbally conveyed to the mechanic by equipment operators.
- Establishes or continues a record for each individual piece of equipment in the Departments. Records may be in electronic format (database). Recording any work performed on equipment and a cost of material and labor needed to make repairs.
- Performs inspections of fuel, hydraulic and electrical systems of equipment.
- Prepares order forms and directs the order of materials, supplies, and equipment necessary to expedite cost effective repairs. Recommends the purchase of equipment and tools.
- Must maintain a clean and safe working area.
- Heavy lifting will be required at times, working in adverse weather conditions (repairs at scene of breakdown), work is performed in the presence of grease, oil, fumes, etc.
- Performs other duties, as assigned by Superintendent and/or Working Foreman, in the operation of the Highway or Town Departments.
- Will be available for snow plowing/sanding and emergencies at all hours.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a variety of environments with exposure to severe weather likely.
Physical Requirements
Work requires heavy physical effort at times. Work may have to be performed under adverse conditions and at all hours of the day.
Work requires knowledge of operations of heavy equipment and special tools used in the operations of the Highway Department. Class B CDL motor vehicle license and a Massachusetts Hoisting Engineers License with at least 2A restrictions. A forty hour a week position with emergency call ins. Must perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent and/or Working Foreman in the operations of the Highway Department.
