About Perioperative Services
Join a team that performs with precision, compassion, and purpose. MD Anderson's Perioperative Services team is dedicated to creating the safest surgical environment while achieving the highest standards of care. In partnership with Anesthesiology, Critical Care, Nursing, and Surgery, our department performs more than 15,000 surgical cases each year across 30+ operating rooms in the Main Building and Mays Clinic.
Position Summary
The Surgical Technologist plays a critical role in supporting surgical procedures by preparing and maintaining a sterile field, ensuring instruments and equipment are ready and functioning, and assisting the surgical team to deliver safe, efficient, and exceptional patient care. This position offers more than a job; it is a career built on purpose, innovation, and teamwork.
The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience in a tertiary hospital as a surgical technologist in the Operating Room assisting with Robotic, Laparoscopic, and Open surgical procedures (e.g., liver, pancreas, abdominoperineal resections, and/or thoracic procedures).
Shift Information
- Specific shift will be determined based on institutional needs.
- The first six months include Operating Room Orientation, Monday-Friday, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM.
Key Responsibilities
Accountability & Safety
- Adhere to all safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Identify and immediately address breaks in sterile technique or unsafe conditions.
- Maintain organization and workflow efficiency to ensure on-time case starts and timely turnovers.
- Handle, store, and maintain surgical supplies and equipment properly.
- Demonstrate flexibility by cross-training and supporting various surgical specialties.
Clinical Excellence
- Prepare, set up, and verify surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Anticipate the surgeon's and team's needs to ensure smooth, efficient procedures.
- Maintain strict aseptic technique and perform accurate sponge, instrument, and sharps counts.
- Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives and best practices.
Team Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with all members of the surgical team.
- Support a positive, respectful, and professional work environment.

EDUCATION
- Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Preferred: Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program
WORK EXPERIENCE
- Preferred: At least three years of Surgical Technologist experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Required: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) upon hire; or
- Required: New graduate must obtain and maintain certification within 180 Days; or
- Required: Employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility prior to September 1, 2009 upon hire; or
- Required: Completed appropriate training program for surgical technology in the military of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service upon hire.
