Store Manager in Training (SMIT)

E&H Ace Hardware is looking for a motivated and service-oriented individual to join our team as a Store Manager in Training (SMIT). This transitional role is designed for future leaders who are eager to grow into a Store Manager position. Through structured mentorship and hands-on experience, you’ll learn every aspect of operating a successful Ace Hardware store—from customer service and team leadership to inventory control and sales strategy.

This is a temporary, developmental position with the expectation that successful candidates will transition into a Store Manager role upon completion of the program. Candidates must demonstrate leadership potential, strong communication skills, and a passion for retail excellence.

What You’ll Learn and Do:

Training & Development

  • Participate in a structured training program designed to develop retail management skills

  • Learn and model E&H’s core values, culture, and customer service standards

  • Receive ongoing coaching from experienced Store and Assistant Managers

Customer Service Excellence

  • Observe and engage with customers to develop expert-level service and problem-solving skills

  • Promote a helpful and welcoming store environment in line with our Customer First Sales Culture

Team Leadership

  • Shadow store leaders to learn effective supervision, training, and motivation techniques

  • Begin developing leadership experience by assisting in team development and direction

Operations & Inventory Management

  • Gain hands-on experience with receiving, merchandising, inventory control, and sales floor standards

  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized store that meets operational expectations

Sales Performance & Analysis

  • Learn how to analyze sales data, customer trends, and performance metrics

  • Assist store leaders in identifying opportunities to increase sales and improve team performance

Vendor Relations

  • Learn the fundamentals of working with vendors, placing orders, and maintaining stock

  • Support the Store Manager with inventory replenishment and merchandising

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred

  • Retail or customer service experience preferred, but not required

Skills & Attributes

  • Demonstrated leadership potential and eagerness to grow into management

  • Passion for helping customers with home improvement and hardware needs

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment

  • Basic computer and point-of-sale (POS) system experience is a plus

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move about the store for extended periods

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs occasionally
